BATON ROUGE - The Capital Area Transit System wants to increase bus fares to help with the cost of operations.

The changes being considered include eliminating transfer fees and raising the price of daily, weekly and monthly passes.

Right now it cost $1.75 for a one-way trip. CATS wants to increase that to $2. But riders are asking why, with a million dollars per year in fares and a recent tax to support the system, they still need more money.

"I want someone held accountable for whatever happened to that money. I want them to not raise the rates. I want them to get off their butts and get this right," said CATS rider Amanda Owens.

CATS also wants to get rid of a 25-cent transfer fee. All of these changes will have to first be approved by the board.
