ST. FRANCISVILLE - Firefighters in West Feliciana Parish honored the bravery of a child fighting cancer by making him an honorary member of the department.

The department gave James Walker Jr., or J. J., some simple firefighter training and took him on a ride in one of their pump and rescue trucks.

James Wood with the Fire Protection District said J. J. Was diagnosed with brain cancer more than a year ago and has traveled several times to St. Jude Children's Hospital for treatment. Wood said his certificate honored him for his "bravery, courageousness, compassion and heart."
