Caldwell press conference to stream live on WBRZ.com
BATON ROUGE - Officials with LSU will hold a press conference this afternoon to announce the new hire for head women's basketball coach, Nikki Caldwell.
Caldwell won national championships as both a player and an assistant coach at Tennessee and turned UCLA into a national power in just three years.
Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Joe Alleva announced the decision on Saturday.
Caldwell took over at UCLA in 2008, and in three years led them a 72-26 overall record, reached the NCAA Tournament twice and finished second in the Pac-10 in both 2010 and 2011. She was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 2010 after going 25-9 overall and reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bruins spent the entire 2010-11 season ranked in the top 20 and they claimed the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Bruins finished the year with just five losses, the fewest in school history during the NCAA era.
Caldwell replaces Van Chancellor, who stepped down after the Lady Tigers did not receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1998. Chancellor will finish the remainder of his coaching contract as an assistant to the LSU athletic director.
