Caddo deputy taken to hospital after car is struck
SHREVEPORT - A Caddo Parish sheriff's deputy is recovering after his patrol car was struck while he was trying to help a stranded motorist.
The sheriff's department says Deputy Mark McLaughlin stopped about 11 a.m. Sunday by Interstate 220 between Lakeshore and Jefferson-Paige.
A driver had pulled over on the shoulder of eastbound lanes. A Motorist Assist Patrol vehicle stopped to help, and McLaughlin parked his patrol car behind it.
The sheriff's department says McLaughlin was inside his car with emergency lights flashing when it was struck from behind by a sport utility vehicle.
McLaughlin was taken by ambulance to University Health, where he was being evaluated.
The SUV driver told authorities she reached for her purse when she hit the patrol car. It wasn't immediately clear whether charges would be filed.
