BATON ROUGE- Cable barriers are set to be installed next month on portions of I-10 between Baton Rouge and News Orleans.
Money for the $2.7-million project will come from safety funds from the Federal Highway Administration.
In East Baton Rouge Parish the project will begin at Highland Road and extend one mile to the Ascension Parish line. There will be 11 miles of cable barriers installed in Ascension Parish, 8 miles in St. John Parish, and 2.5 miles in Jefferson Parish.
Colonel Mike Edmonson with Louisiana State Police say the barriers save lives.
"We haven't had a single death on I-12 since those barriers were put up," Col. Edmonson said.
The cable barriers are designed to deflect vehicles that drive into the median without pushing them back into traffic.
The project is set to be complete next spring.
