BUTTE LAROSE-  Boats are being used by St. Martin Parish Sheriff's deputies for safety and security in the Butte LaRose Canal.

Many camps back up to the waterway, giving thieves or vandals the opportunity to do some damage while people have evacuated from the area.

The St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office Marine Division is now patrolling the waterway, with deputies looking for criminal activity and making sure the canal's no-wake zone is obeyed.

A wake could help push water inside a home or camp once the flood waters rise.
