Busy weekend of holiday travel begins
BATON ROUGE - A busy weekend of holiday travel is now underway.
An estimated 41 million Americans will getaway for the Independence Day weekend, but many people won't be satisfied with a three day weekend. A lot of families are stretching out the holiday and hitting the road today.
Gas prices could put a damper on the trip for some vacationers. Prices at the pump are supposed to be the highest in six years this weekend. The national average is now up to around $3.67 a gallon. The crisis in Iraq is behind the recent bump, and it's expected to go even higher as more people hit the road over the next few days.
Police also want to warn people who plan to drink this holiday. Law enforcement will be out in force as part of the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign. It runs through Sunday.
State Trooper Jared Sandifer joined us on 2une In Thursday morning to talk about what his guys are doing to keep you safe on the road this weekend. Check out the video.
