BATON ROUGE - A coalition of Louisiana business and civic groups are calling on Gov. Bobby Jindal to keep the Common Core education standards in Louisiana schools.

The groups - which include many of the state's chambers of commerce - noted in a letter Friday that state lawmakers and education leaders have voted to maintain the benchmarks adopted by most states for English and math.

They say if the governor takes an executive action to kill the standards, it would constitute an overreach that violates "the spirit of the democratic process."

Common Core opponents want Jindal to unilaterally remove Louisiana from the standards and its associated testing, and the governor has said he's committed to getting Louisiana out of Common Core.

Whether he has any authority to take such an action remains unclear.
