MARINGOUIN - A driver employed by the Iberville Parish School Board worked overnight at the parish sheriff's office before wrecking a bus with more than dozen students on it this morning, according to the deputies.
The Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office confirmed the bus driver is an overnight dispatcher for them, and also drives buses for the parish school board. They did not confirm his identity.
Maringouin Police said around 7 a.m. Thursday the man's bus struck a house and went into a nearby bayou at LA 76 and Musson Lane. Police said the driver told them he couldn't turn the bus, and that he'd rather hit the house than run into a tree.
There were 20 students on the bus when it wrecked. Four were taken to local hospitals complaining of neck and back pain, but police said there were no serious injuries.
Police ticketed the driver for failure to maintain control, and took him to be tested for drugs or alcohol. They said they don't believe he was impaired.
News 2's Michael Shingleton will have more on this wreck and investigation tonight starting at 4 p.m.
