BATON ROUGE - A fire destroyed a bus maintenance building this morning and spilled oil into the nearby streets, according the Baton Rouge Fire Department.

The building at 7106 Greenwell Springs Road and equipment inside were a total loss, according to Curt Monte with BRFD.

The fire was called in at 1:16 a.m., and when Monte said when firefighters arrived the building was completely engulfed in flames. He said the roof also collapsed shortly after firefighters arrived, and two buses as well as other maintenance equipment inside the building were also destroyed.

Monte said firefighters also found motor oil pouring from the building and into the nearby street. HazMat responders and a crew from Exxon Mobil brought in equipment to contain the spill, which shut down Greenwell Springs Road between Lobdell Ave. and Victoria Drive until noon.

The Department of Environmental Quality was also called to the scene, and the company's owner hired a private contractor to clean up the spill.

Monte said they didn't know how much oil spilled, or what caused the fire at this time.
