SPRINGFIELD, La.- A property owner shot a teen trying to break into a Livingston Parish home this morning, according to the sheriff's office.

LPSO spokesperson Perry Rushing said they were called out to a shooting on Church of God Road near Springfield around 9 a.m.

He said 18-year-old Aaron Church tried to break into a vacant home, which set off an alarm and alerted the homeowner who lives nearby. The homeowner, a former NOPD officer, arrived and shot the person in the shoulder.

"When he first jumped over the steps he came toward me so I pulled the gun out. I didn't want to die so I popped the cap," homeowner Tom Casey said.

Church, who faces burglary charges, was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. Casey was questioned and released by the sheriff's office.
