BATON ROUGE - People having sewer problems along Burbank Drive are getting a fix through the weekend.

Burbank between Nicholson Drive and Parker Boulevard is down to one lane in both directions while workers fix the sewer system. Workers dug a hole in the middle of the roadway to investigate why sewage wasn't getting to the main line.

Amy Schulze with the Department of Public Works says complaints of slow flushing toilets in the area led investigators to find a 20-year-old concrete pipe in bad shape.

"When we got down there we found that the pipe was badly corroded and badly collapsed," she said. "It was an old concrete pipe that had just over the years hit its useful life."

Workers replaced the worn concrete pipe with a new PVC pipe and plan to backfill the hole Friday. You can expect lane closures through the weekend.

"[Saturday] they will work on preparing the roadway surface, saw-cutting the existing asphalt so they can pour concrete, weather permitting on Sunday," said Schulze. "Assuming we don't have any weather issues over the weekend, we should be open by this weekend."

With rain in the weekend forecast, the fix could go into next week.
