State lawmakers said they're tired of seeing the New Orleans Recovery School District receive the lion's share of federal grant money.
State Representatives Bodi White and Mert Smiley criticized the process during a meeting of the joint budget committee. White said the state should consider taking over all of the schools in the district if they meet the guidelines. He said that may help the system get federal aid. Smiley said other parishes should get help from the RSD's grant writers.
St. Helena Parish schools have major maintenance problems, and some are having trouble meeting safety code standards. A judge is considering a plan to bus the students out of the district.
