BATON ROUGE - Police say a woman was arrested Tuesday for a crash she caused last summer when she passed out at the wheel from injecting heroin while driving down I-10 with her 4-year-old in the back seat.

According to Baton Rouge Police, officers were dispatched to the scene of that wreck on June 8. EMS at the scene told police they found 27-year-old Brandi Roussel unresponsive with a needle in her arm and her 4-year-old child in the back seat of the vehicle. They were able to revive her with CPR before she was taken to an area hospital.

Investigators said they discovered a small clear bag with white powder inside the car next to an exposed needle.

Police said Roussel admitted to buying heroin at an unknown location. She also admitted to police that she tried to inject it while she drove down the interstate with her child in the back seat. The report did not indicate whether or not the child was injured in the crash.

Roussel told officers that she did not remember anything after injecting herself and passing out. After saying she wanted to help detectives with future narcotics investigations, BRPD said Roussel was released from the hospital pending her cooperation.

On Jan. 2, a warrant was issued for her arrest after police said she did not help detectives and was uncooperative. She was taken into custody Tuesday and booked on charges of drug possession and using drugs in the presence of a child.

Roussel was arrested Tuesday, and booked into EBR Parish Prison on charges of drug and drug paraphernalia possession along with using a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of a child.
