BATON ROUGE - State Police arrested  27-year-old Whitney Wilson for driving while intoxicated with children in her car, causing serious injuries.

According to State Police, a crash occurred on Sunday around 8:50 p.m. causing East Baton Rouge EMS and St. George Fire Department to shut down the intersection.

According to State Police, one car was going south on US 61, about to turn on Barringer Foreman Road while a second car was going north. The car turned, directly into the path of the second car resulting in the two crashing and traveling off the road into the canal.

Wilson was driving three passengers in the car, whom included children ranging from 2 years old to ten years old.

There were not any child seats and the passenger seat belt was not buckled, according to State Police.

In the second car, the driver and 5 year old both suffered serious injuries.

Both drivers and all passengers were treated for injuries by EMS.

Wilson told police that she drank two large alcoholic drinks a couple of hours before the crash.

Wilson further explained that she was trying to beat the light before turning on Barringer Foreman Road.

A field sobriety test was conducted where Wilson showed signs of intoxication, according to State Police. She was arrested and then transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital to be treated for her injuries from the crash.

A blood sample was also taken for testing, according to State Police.

The arrest report implies that the other driver involved in the accident, could have spinal injuries and one of the children could have suffered some brain damage, however state police were not ready to confirm the injuries on Monday afternoon.

Wilson was arrested and booked with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, three counts of child passenger restraint system, and five charges of first degree vehicular negligent injuring.

Once discharged from the hospital, Wilson will be transported to EBR jail and booked on all charges. According to State Police, if any of the passengers’ condition worsen, more charges could be filed.
