BATON ROUGE - Police said the suspect in a weekend hit and run which put a man in the hospital turned himself in to Baton Rouge traffic investigators this morning.

Police said John Baus III, 24, will be charged with felony hit and run, careless operation, and running a red light.

Investigators said Baus hit a pedestrian, Matt Tugwell, as Tugwell was crossing in a crosswalk at the intersection of Dalrymple and E. State Street late Saturday night. Witnesses said Tugwell was thrown into the air and hit the windshield of Baus' vehicle. Tugwell was taken to the hospital and put in intensive care, where he remained through Monday.

Police said they later got a tip the car was at a local repair shop, and recovered it Monday.

Baus' attorney, Frank Holthaus, says his client wasn't trying to hide from the authorities.

"He quickly parked his car. Had it towed in to a local body shop. There was no effort to hide it. He called his parents and they called me," said Holthaus.

The attorney says he tried calling police Sunday so Baus could turn himself in, but there was no response. He tried calling again Monday, but was unsuccessful until Tuesday morning.

"He takes responsibility for what he did. Others will take responsibility for what they did," said Holthaus.
