BRPD: Shooting victim had long record
BATON ROUGE- Police are looking for answers after a man was shot and found dead in a canal near Washington Ave and Belfair Drive.
Police said Tuesday they aren't sure what killed 38-year-old Alexander Jason Scott, the gunshot wounds he suffered or the water he was found in. A neighbor called police after discovering Scott face down in the canal around 7:30 a.m. Scott was known to neighbors as "String Bean," and family members identified him at the scene.
Neighbors said they heard multiple gunshots Monday night around 9 p.m., but they didn't hear any voices and didn't see anyone.
"People in this neighborhood have been asking for years for them to do something about that opening there because most people don't feel safe these are elderly people that lives in this neighborhood now," said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous.
The Department of Public Works says they'll go out to inspect the downed fence near the canal and see if they can make the area more safe.
Police told News 2 they don't have a motive for the shooting, but noted Scott had an arrest record that goes back 20 years for drugs and burglary.
"We know that, that person lived a certain lifestyle so that may have contributed to the death, but we're not 100 percent sure," said Cpl. L'Jean McNeely with Baton Rouge Police. ""That may be the reason, so that's why we ask any individuals who may know of what might have happened come forward and point us in the direction that we may need to go."
