BATON ROUGE- The Baton Rouge Police Department has released the names of the two officers injured in shootout over the weekend. They mortally wounded the man who was shooting at them.

According to a Baton Rouge Police spokesperson, Theodore Smith III and Sean Garic were taken to the hospital after being injured in a shootout with a man who had fled from them in a car.

The alleged gunman, Calvin Smith, 22, died over the weekend after being shot during the exchange.

The shootout happened early Saturday morning in the 5600 block of Fairfields Avenue. Police say Smith led the officers on a high speed chase, after they responded to a damage to property call.

Authorities say Smith drove to a family member's house on Fairfields Avenue. According to police he got out of his vehicle with a high-caliber semi-automatic long rifle and began shooting at the officers.

Both officers were shot, but were able to return fire and strike Smith. Both officers were taken to the hospital after the shooting. One of them was released over the weekend.
