BRPD: One arrested, stolen NOPD gun used in killing
BATON ROUGE - Police arrested one person after a deadly shooting in Baton Rouge overnight which they said involved a gun stolen from New Orleans Police.
Lt. Don Kelly said Baton Rouge Police arrested Jermaine Ruffen, 29, on suspicion of shooting and killing Anthony Jerard Jones, 29, and injuring another person in the 5200 block of Evangeline just after midnight.
Investigators said Jones and a woman were doing a drug deal with Ruffen when he shot both of them and fled. Patrol officers were in the area, and the female victim gave them Ruffen's description. They located him shortly after and said he ran, throwing something away before officers caught him.
Kelly said a K9 found the object, which turned out to be a stolen NOPD service weapon and matched the caliber of the gun used in the Evangeline shooting. He said the gun was stolen from an off-duty officer's car while they were in Baton Rouge, but never recovered.
Police charged Ruffen with first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, illegal possession of a stolen firearm and illegal use of a weapon.
