BATON ROUGE - A Baton Rouge Police officer has returned from leave following an incident at Earth Day festivities downtown in April.

Sgt. Todd Bourgoyne was put on paid leave after video surfaced of Bourgoyne hitting a 16-year-old several times in the head during an arrest. Officers were responding to incidents of violence that erupted in the downtown area while Earth Day events were going on.

The department confirmed Thursday, Bourgoyne was taken off paid administrative leave and returned to regular duty at the beginning of May.

Bourgoyne was assigned to the BRPD Traffic Division at the time of the incident. He has been employed by BRPD for the past 22 years.

An internal affairs investigation into the arrest continues, police said.
