BRPD: Man tried to run detectives down
BATON ROUGE - Police arrested a Baton Rouge man after they said he tried to run several officers over during an attempted traffic stop Monday night.
Investigators charged Damiene Lewis, 36, with the attempted murder of a police officer, drug possession, aggravated flight, and careless operation of a vehicle.
According to arrest records police spotted Lewis driving a Porsche SUV erratically in the 2300 block of Evangeline Street around 10:30 p.m. Monday. Officers said when they tried to stop him, Lewis took off through a red light at Scenic and Hollywood.
Detectives said they continued to try and pull Lewis over, and that he pulled into oncoming traffic and blew through several stop signs. When police stopped Lewis on Hollywood Drive, they said he tried to run over a group of detectives who had to jump out of the way.
Investigators said Lewis finally stopped in a driveway on 71st Street, but wouldn't follow detectives' commands to get out of the vehicle. When they removed him, police said they spotted several doses of hydrocodone lying inside the vehicle.
Police said Lewis has an extensive record with narcotics arrests, firearms charges and resisting officer charges. Detectives said Lewis also threatened to get them fired when he was being booked into the parish prison.
