BATON ROUGE - Detectives say a California man, suspected in counterfeit credit card activity, was arrested earlier in August after he used a stolen credit card to pay for a hotel room in Baton Rouge.

40-year-old Avriste West, of Oakland, California, was taken into custody on Aug. 9 and booked on charges of monetary instrument abuse, access device fraud, felony theft and identity theft. Police said they made contact with West at the Marriot Hotel located at 5500 Hilton Ave.

Investigators said they learned West had been using several fake IDs along with counterfeit credit cards. During a search of the hotel room at the Marriot, detectives said they confiscated several tools used in counterfeit activity including an Apple iPad, PayPal credit card swiping devices, blank credit cards, tax returns, stolen credit cards and a magnetic card swiper. Police also found West to be in possession of a stolen vehicle.

BRPD say the investigation is ongoing.
