Brother, sister killed along Bluff Road Tuesday
PRAIRIEVILLE - State Police released the names of two children, a brother and sister, who were killed when an out-of-control car ran them over earlier Tuesday.
David Lanus, 6, and Faria Lanus, 9, were killed. They were from Geismar. The pair was fishing with their father and two other men along Bluff Road.
"There were just out here spending time with the family having a good time for the summer and, unfortunately, it was a tragic incident," the spokesperson for Louisiana State Police, Jared Sandifer, said.
"Our troopers are out here trying to determine exactly what caused the crash, what caused the driver to drive off the side of the road and strike that group of fishers."
Investigators said Shawnette B. Taylor, 47, ran off the roadway, down an embankment and hit the group as they were fishing along a canal below the road.
The Lanus children were pronounced dead at the scene. Their father and two other fishing partners were taken to a hospital in Baton Rouge. Taylor had minor injuries.
Troopers said impairment is not suspected but a toxicology sample was taken. Charges have not been filed in connection with the crash but the investigation is open, a State Police spokesperson said.
The wreck happened in an area with a deep curve about three miles south of I-10. Drivers who use the highway often said the area is a popular fishing spot.
State Police closed the highway for more than two hours. It opened around 8 p.m.
