BATON ROUGE - Firefighters said a man who died in a structure fire early Wednesday morning in Baton Rouge had lit several fires in the building to try and stay warm.
Investigators said Curtis Moore, 71, was found in the back of the home at 3751 Sycamore Street after the fire was put out around 2:20 a.m.
Robert Combs with the Baton Rouge Fire Department said they believe Moore set fires in several different containers, and the structure fire began in the front of the building.
Residents near the home said it had been condemned, but they had seen Moore starting fires inside to try and stay warm before. Firefighters confirmed to News 2 that the structure didn't have any active utilities, and was uninhabitable before the fire broke out.
"I was just scared. I've never experienced anything like that and just to know someone actually died. That was my first time ever seeing an actual fire. I was scared," said next door neighbor, Valencia Young.
The exact cause of Moore's death is still under investigation.
