BREC Zoo announces elephant Judy has died
BATON ROUGE - The BREC Baton Rouge Zoo announced that its Asian elephant named Judy has died.
Zoo director Phil Frost said Judy was a "geriatric" animal at age 46, and died after a long illness. Asian elephants can live up to age 60 in the wild, according to the Smithsonian.
"Judy had a long life at our Zoo," Frost said. "We feel privileged to have cared for her throughout her life, and our staff is deeply saddened by this loss."
The zoo said Judy came to them in 1974. She was born in Kabul, Afghanistan.
