BREC plans to demo the Gus Young pool
BATON ROUGE - The Gus Young pool has been around for more than 50 years and by the end of the summer it won't even be recognizable as a pool.
BREC plans on demolishing the historic pool after mounting maintenance costs and lack of use has forced the pool to close the last two summers.
Those that grew up around the park remember the days the pool being a hot destination to get cool.
"I remember us traveling to the pool it was always filled with kids in the neighborhood it was a wonderful community gathering", says Monique Scott-Spaulding.
The fencing around the pool is covered in tarps for the moment. Once the pool is filled in, BREC officials say there is an endless amount of possibilities that could benefit and even attract more people to the park.
There will be a public meeting hosted by BREC sometime in the summer to get a jump-start on ideas that will help.
For now, kids looking to swim can utilize the BREC water park, "Liberty Lagoon" which is a less than ten-minute drive from the Gus Young Park.
