BREC could be asked to care for older cemeteries
BATON ROUGE- One city leader wants the park system to manage and upkeep old cemeteries.
Councilwoman Tara Wicker wants BREC to get a grant to handle the operation of the Lutheran Cemetery in Old South Baton Rouge. Grass is overgrown and graves are in disrepair.
Another cemetery, Sweet Olive has also experienced similar problems and also includes, busted graves, and caskets that are exposed to the elements.
The cemeteries are cleaned by volunteers but the help is not consistent.
BREC already takes care of one cemetery in Mid City.
