BATON ROUGE- Some Baton Rouge city pools won't re-open this summer.

BREC announced they are shutting down Webb and Jefferson Park pools partly because nobody uses them.

"You'll be over there at any of those two pools or some of our other facilities during the day and there wouldn't be anybody but our staff out there," says Aquatics Manager Brett Weinberger.

Weinberger says it costs around $100,000 to run the two pools, money he says BREC wants to spend elsewhere.

"For example, in an area where the pools would've been, we'll have some green grass, some picnic tables, some walking trails. Some of the work at Jefferson has already been done," Weinberger explains.

Weinberger said people can go two miles away to Liberty Lagoon Park on Lobdell Road, but some say that is no consolation.

"As it is of now, they can ride their bikes or they could walk. They will not be able to go that far without a parent," says Stephanie Phares.

Liberty Lagoon costs $8 to $10 to enter while the rest of the pools are $1.25.

"I'm a little disappointed about it because I'd hate to see BREC shutting down things like this, mainly for kids. I understand it costs them money to operate it but all of BREC'S activities cost money," says Ben Gibbens.

BREC runs seven pools, including the two that are closing.
