BATON ROUGE - In about a year, the giant patch of mud behind the northern portion of the Mall of Louisiana will be transformed into the first phase of an expansive running and biking trail.

BREC broke ground Thursday on the Capital Area Pathways Project, with construction beginning in early January.

"My vision for this community is that we have a trail network from the top of the parish, to the bottom of the parish," said Carolyn McKnight, BREC Superintendent.

The CAPP trail begins at the Mall of Louisiana and will eventually loop around Perkins Rowe, Pennington Biomedical Research Center, the LSU Rural Life Museum and back to Bluebonnet along Wards Creek.

"Transportation is another amazing aspect of this because that means people don't have to ride in the street with cars," said Baton Rouge Advocates for Safe Streets founder Mark Martin.

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation of Louisiana donated one million dollars to the project to help fight obesity in Baton Rouge, but some bikers are just happy to have another place to ride.

"Having that access for that much territory and that many people and that many neighborhoods, we'll see a huge increase in the number of people that are actually willing to ride," said Martin.  "We've been waiting five years for this, and it's really good to see this part of it, at least.  I'll be really happy when it's on the ground."
