Breast reconstruction with tissue transplants
BATON ROUGE - As Breast Cancer Awareness Month draws to a close, plastic surgeon Dr. J. Anthony Stephens visited the studio again to talk about reconstructive surgery techniques for breasts.
Last week, Dr. Stephens discussed more expensive surgical techniques for this type of surgery that uses implants and tissue expanders to reconstruct the breast. Some women can't afford this, so the surgeon talked about less costly transplant techniques on today's show.
Dr. Stephens explained the rapid advances cosmetic surgeons have made in recent years in the types of transplant surgeries they are performing. They can now take tissue from many places on a woman's body to use in the process of giving women who have had a mastectomy the look they desire. Plastic surgeons like Dr. Stephens now custom-tailor their approach for the type of reconstructive surgery he talked about on today's show. Each surgery is as unique as the patient, and Dr. Stephens said the woman's body type can dictate where they get the tissue needed to successfully reconstruct the breast.
Check out the attached video to see illustrations of how the reconstructive surgery works as Dr. Stephens describes how and where they assess the needs of the patient.
