BATON ROUGE - A breakaway school district in Baton Rouge is closer to becoming a reality, after a House committee gave the bill its support today.

The district would be bordered by I-10 and I-12 in the southeast part of the parish. Supporters say they want to create a community school district similar to the ones in Zachary and Central.

"Whether you personally support this change or not, please allow the people involved, the parents the educators, the citizens of the state, to make their voices heard," said a concerned parent.

Critics say the district would unfairly drain the East Baton Rouge Parish school system of students and resources.

"It's wrong. It's wrong for students. Too many unanswered questions, there's nothing about it that speaks to the reality of the situation," said Dr. Bernard Taylor, superintendent of EBR Schools.

The bill moves on to the full House where it was defeated last year.
