Breakaway school district legislation to be discussed today

BATON ROUGE - Legislation will be discussed today in the Senate Education Committee pertaining to the proposed Southeast Baton Rouge School District, a group seeking to break away from the East Baton Rouge Parish School System.

Senator Mack A. "Bodi" White, Jr. authored the bills.

Senate Bill 299 pertains to the necessity of a constitutional amendment to grant the Southeast Baton Rouge community school system in East Baton Rouge Parish the same authority granted parishes relative to the funding and raising revenue for schools.

Senate Bill 563 would create and provides for the Southeast Baton Rouge Community School Board and school system in East Baton Rouge Parish.

The group has urged supporters to come to the State Capitol today to rally in support of the bills.
