BATON ROUGE - A proposed breakaway school district cleared an important hurdle after the Senate Finance Committee voted favorably for it to reach the Senate floor.

The bill, authored by Senator Bodi White of Baton Rouge, would create a new school district in East Baton Rouge Parish between I-10 and I-12.

East Baton Rouge Parish Superintendent Dr. Bernard Taylor argues that would leave his district poorer and drain the schools of some his brightest students.

"What's left behind will not be enough to maintain the excellent programs that are available to every student in the parish," said Dr. Taylor in front of the Finance Committee.

"EBR is losing dollars, tax dollars, their losing the revenue, but they're losing the obligation, they're losing those expenses so you have to balance out the expenses with the revenues," argued White.

The Finance Committee passed the bill onto the Senate floor by a vote of 8-1. If it's approved by the legislature it would then go to voters for approval on a statewide vote.
