BRCC struggling to recoup lost money
BATON ROUGE - Baton Rouge Community College is having a hard time getting back hundreds of thousands of dollars it accidentally overpaid to employees.
Poor oversight in the human resources department at BRCC led to more than $500,000 in overpayments during fiscal year 2012, according to a report released by the Legislative Auditor Monday.
BRCC has been trying to recoup the money for more than a year, but the report shows less than half had been repaid as of early December. It also showed even more errors in the college's human resources department led to the shortcomings.
"In some cases, the proper amount to be recouped was was improperly calculated," said Tom Cole, with the state Legislative Auditor's office, "so it's been a sequence of errors that's prevented them from collecting all of it."
BRCC responded to the audit by adding more oversight in an attempt to cut down on the human error which led to the overpayment. Auditors said this is unique to BRCC, and they haven't found these problems at any other state technical college.
"Any time you have problems with the payroll department, that can lead to erroneous payments, may have fraud and certainly lost funds to the college," Cole said.
Baton Rouge Community College did not return phone calls for comment.
The audit will be followed up with another audit report next year.
