BRAVE expands into 70802
BATON ROUGE - BRAVE is expanding their efforts into 70802 zip code in Baton Rouge to tackle crime.
BRAVE officials held a ribbon cutting at the Family and Youth Services Center on Government Street to celebrate the new facility and the expansion into 70802. Residents in the area said they hope to see more police present.
Robert Perkins and his wife have live in the 70802 area along Louisiana Avenue just a few blocks from where the local boxer was killed. Perkins said if more police patrolled his neighborhood crime wouldn't be as bad as it is.
"There's a lot of killing in this area, a lot of drugs and nobody does anything about it," said Perkins. "I think it'll prevent crime if they become visible in the community."
BRAVE officials said since 2013-2014, the murder rate has decreased in the 70805 zip code by 25 percent. However, crime in the 70802 zip code has increased by 67 percent.
Officials also said with an increased presence of law enforcement in one area they believe crime has moved down slightly into the 70802 area.
BRAVE Director for 70802 Capt. Rodney Walker said his plan is to focus on the area as a whole before looking into certain hot spots with high criminal activity.
"We have to take it to the streets and meet each individual block by block," said Walker. "That way we can put together the proper plan and not just think that we know what's going on but to ask them."
But for residents like Perkins he said he hopes to change in his neighborhood.
"If you want the community to support you, you've got help them," said Perkins. "You've got to make sure you're visible and talk to the people in the community than you'll be suprised with what you find out."
