BR residents voice bridge worries after Wash. collapse
BATON ROUGE - There's concern about the safety of bridges in Baton Rouge after a section of bridge collapsed in Washington State last week, sending cars and people into the water.
"I'm really concerned about the safety of my family," said Darryl Ross.
The National Bridge Inventory Database lists 74 bridges in Baton Rouge that are "structurally deficient." That means a bridge is damaged in some way.
Bridges in Louisiana are inspected every two years to make sure all bridges are up to standard and safe for drivers.
"If there is ever any doubt or any concern and emergent situation, then we would absolutely close the bridge," said DOTD Communication Director Jodi Conachen.
In the last five years, DOTD has invested more than a billion dollars in bridge repairs.
