BATON ROUGE - Authorities have upgraded charges against a Baton Rouge man accused of throwing his grandmother down hard enough to kill her.
Cpl. L'Jean McKneely said Kendrick Montrell Johnson, 19, was arrested on May 3 and accused of grabbing and throwing his grandmother Joyce Pointer, 61, to the ground while he was in a fight with his mother.
McKneely said Pointer was taken to a local hospital and later died from her injuries.
Johnson was originally charged with second-degree battery and felony theft. McKneely said with Pointer's death, the battery charge was upgrade to manslaughter.
Johnson remains in the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail.
