BP has received approval from the Environmental Protection Agency to continuously spray chemicals underwater on the main oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. Workers began pumping the chemicals on the site at 4:30 a.m. Monday morning.
The dispersants had never been tried at 5,000 feet underwater. Experts have been worried about the effect the dispersant will have on the environment, but BP has been encouraged by the spraying, saying it has helped to keep some oil from reaching the surface.
