Boy dies in tubing accident
HARRISON COUNTRY, MS - Authorities say an 8-year-old New Orleans area boy riding on a tube has died in a boating accident on the Mississippi coast's Wolf River.
Department of Marine Resources spokeswoman Melissa Scallan told The Associated Press that the boy and another sibling were on the tube being pulled Monday afternoon by a boat piloted by the boy's father. When the boat went around a bend, she says, the tube hit a tree and witnesses reported that the boy went under the water. She says the second child wasn't hurt.
Scallan says the injured child, who was wearing a life jacket, was later pronounced dead at a Gulfport hospital where he was taken. Scallan declined to identify those involved by name or whether the other child was a boy or girl.
