Boxer on the way to recovery after shooting
NEW ORLEANS - Boxer Emanuel Augustus is on the road to recovery at a New Orleans hospital.
After being shot in the back of the neck two months ago, the boxer went into a coma. Just recently, Augustus awakened and is up and talking.
Augustus was walking one night when a random bullet hit him. Police later arrested the shooter, but said Augustus was not their target.
His fiancé, Dorothy Anthony, said she was the last person to talk to Augustus on the telephone before he was shot. She recalled the conversation just moments before the bullet hit.
"He said I just called to tell you 'I love you' and goodnight and I said 'I love you too," she told News 2.
Anthony said she then said a prayer for Emanuel before they hung up the phone. Not long after, she got a call saying he had been shot. She said she immediately started praying and then rushed to the hospital.
Since the ordeal, Anthony said she believes Augustus can help people by encouraging them with his story. She has a few words of encouragement of her own.
"Get close to God," she said. "God is a miracle worker. And a mind regulator and a heart fixer."
Anthony said doctors told her that it's possible Augustus will be released before Christmas.
