Bourbon Street poles greased ahead of Mardi Gras
NEW ORLEANS - People filled Bourbon Street Friday morning for the annual "Greasing of the Poles."
It's as much of a New Orleans tradition as Mardi Gras. The poles are greased to keep overzealous revelers from trying to climb to the balconies above.
Burlesque dancers made a show of the greasing at the Royal Sonesta Hotel Friday morning. Saints defensive back Malcolm Jenkins was among the celebrity judges, as was honorary pole greaser Laura Cayouette.
"It has meant a lot to me to be a part of something that has been around before me, and hopefully will be here much longer after me," Cayouette told WWL-TV.
This year's winner was Praline Dupey, who picked up both the people's choice award and judges' vote.
