NORCO- The Army Corps of Engineers opened the Bonnet Carre Spillway just after 8 a.m. today to help ease flooding from the Mississippi River.
The spillway is 28 miles upriver from New Orleans and is expected to alleviate pressure on the levees there.
Ten bays were opened.
While the diversion will help stabilize river levels, the fresh water also poses a danger to oyster grounds that are beginning to recover from last year's BP oil spill.
Meanwhile, there's still no word on opening the Morganza Spillway, but preps are being made in case that flood control structure is opened.
The Morganza Spillway has only been opened one time since it was constructed.
