Bonfires stick out on Levee
LUTCHER - The levees in St. James Parish are lined with bonfires that stick out for miles, all waiting to light the way for Papa Noel on Christmas Eve.
Some bonfire experts spend the entire holiday season constructing works of art for the tradition.
"It's about having a bunch of friends, a bunch of family, it's the weekends, and weekdays that lead up to this, the nights on the levee, everything like that, that's what it's really about," said Jared Deslatte, who is building a castle styled bonfire.
Other people are taking the bonfires past the traditional tepee style, building a log cabin to burn.
"When I go to burn it, it'll be a hard feeling, to build this and have to burn it down," said Reginald Fluence, who wasn't ready to burn his bonfire just yet.
The bonfires will be lit at nightfall on Christmas Eve along the levee in Gramercy and Lutcher.
