Boehner says Obama should take lead on immigration
WASHINGTON- House Speaker John Boehner says it's time to change the nation's immigration policies and called on President Barack Obama to take the lead in coming up with a plan to address the estimated 11 million people living in the country illegally.
Boehner, in a news conference, says Congress should deal with an issue that appeared to have hurt Republicans among Hispanics in Mitt Romney's unsuccessful challenge to Obama. But he declined to say that he would support legislation that would provide a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants, a concept that Republicans have strongly opposed.
He said he was not talking about a 3,000-page bill but a common-sense approach to secure the borders, enforce the laws and fix a broken immigration system.
