BATON ROUGE - The body of the lone gunman that killed three Baton Rouge officers on July 17 was released to family on Tuesday.

Gavin Long's remains were claimed by his mother, Corine Woodley, and were released to a funeral home in Covington.

An Arkansas funeral home is handling the arrangements, but the body had to be released to a licensed facility in Louisiana before beginning its journey back to the shooter's hometown.

Long previously served in the Marines. His mother claims the man suffered from PTSD, yet he was refused treatment. Now, Congress is taking a look into Long's military records to confirm this. Woodley has said in interviews that the VA "did not want to help" her son.

Long specifically targeted law enforcement officers, killing two BRPD officers and an EBRSO deputy during a rampage assault. Three others were injured.

Deputy Bruce Simmons is recovering at home after a pair of surgeries to repair his shattered arm. Deputy Nicholas Tullier remains in critical condition after he was shot in the head and chest.
