Boat fire kills man on board
SULPHUR - The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a fire that destroyed a boat and claimed the life of a man on board.
Authorities were notified of the fire about 9:30 p.m. Saturday near Dunn Ferry Road, which crosses the Calcasieu West Fork - a tributary to the Calcasieu River near Sulphur. Firefighters said Sunday the 32-foot-long cabin cruiser was engulfed in flames upon their arrival.
Investigators say the vessel immediately sank in about 30 feet of water after the fire was extinguished, preventing authorities from accessing the craft. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's dive team later retrieved a body, which was turned over to the parish coroner for autopsy.
Neighbors told investigators the boat's owner had recently acquired the craft and was working on it when they heard a small explosion.
