BATON ROUGE – The ice cream shelves are empty now, but that will change Monday morning.

Managers at the Callandro’s Supermarket in Baton Rouge say they’re hoping to have their freezers stocked with Blue Bell ice cream by 10 a.m. Monday.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, Blue Bell was pulled from store shelves in April after ten people fell ill and three people died from a listeria outbreak. The outbreak was traced back to Blue Bell plants and 23 states were affected.

Listeria is a bacterial infection caused by consuming contaminated food. The Center for Disease Control says symptoms of listeria can include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.

After eight months of testing and retesting, Blue Bell is finally back on the shelves in our area, and consumers are not worried about eating it.

“Tomorrow it comes back,” Blue Bell fan Conner Graham said. “Everyone is going to be going bananas. I’ll probably give it a day or two to die down, but I’m sure I will have it for Christmas.”

“We missed Blue Bell,” Steven Williams said. “We wondered how long it’s going to take for them to right the issues they had. We welcome them back and look forward to buying Blue Bell again.”

With demand high, local grocers like Calandro’s expect customers to buy their product as soon as it hits the shelves.
