BATON ROUGE - Lawmakers rejected a bill today that sought to end most standardized testing in Louisiana public schools.

The House Education Committee voted 13 to 3 against the measure from Rep. Barbara Norton, D-Shreveport.

Norton told the committee she authored the bill because she feels the tests are unfair, since only public school students are required to take them.

"If we're not going to test some of them, let's not test any of them," Norton said during a hearing over the bill today. "If we think testing is so important that we have it. Let's make sure everybody has a test."

The bill was opposed by state education officials and Gov. Bobby Jindal's office. The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education defended the system, saying it may not be perfect but student performance has improved since the LEAP tests began.
