BATON ROUGE - As a $1.1 million project comes to a close on the Baton Rouge riverfront, another downtown development is primed to give a boost to safety and tourism in the section of the city.

That project, the levee loop, will feature a lighted path when completed that will make enjoying the river after a nightfall a much safer option for Baton Rouge residents and tourists to enjoy. The established routes will cover between a half mile and a mile and half.

While walking and jogging will surely be popular options on the path, bicyclists will reap the benefits of the project as well as bike racks and water fountains will be added features. In fact, the Downtown Development District plans to add 70 more bike racks along the loop before the end of the year. Many local biking enthusiasts welcome the push.

Other bike experts say it's high time the city pushed some extra security and resources in the direction of those who favor the form of transportation for work or pleasure. The extra bike racks will give cyclists many more options for stowing their ride to enjoy the downtown area, and the extra lighting goes a step further to make a previously desolate and comparably dangerous area into a true nighttime attraction.
