Bike and pedestrian path has opened
NEW ORLEANS - After years planning and 11 months of construction, a 2-mile bike and pedestrian path has opened along the Mississippi River levee in the city's Algiers area.
The Times-Picayune reports the $3 million project, commissioned by the Algiers Development District, is an asphalt ribbon connecting the Algiers Point ferry terminal to the former Todd Shipyard site just downriver from the Federal City development.
A continuous paved levee now stretches from the foot of Huey P. Long Avenue in Gretna to the Todd Shipyard site. Only the Algiers portion is lighted.
The path includes about 70 solar-powered lights.
